Yellowstone became a national park on March 1, 1872 by the U.S. Congress. The park is vivid, bright and very beautiful.

It is also a huge park forming a square like rectangle with an irregular eastern side, which is 63 miles from north to south and 54 miles from east to west and covers an area of 3,472 square miles.

1. Yellowstone the first national park

It is the oldest, one of the largest, and maybe the best-known national park in the United States. It was established by the U.S. Congress on March 1, 1872, as the country’s first national park.

Yellowstone National Park consists of three mountain ranges, the Gallatin Range in the northwest, the Absaroka Range in the east, and the northern extremity of the Teton Range. 


3. Mountains in the Yellowstone

The tallest mountains is the Absarokas with elevations of 10,000 feet (3000m) and the highest point is the Eagle peek with 11,358 feet (3462m).

4. Yellowstone Lake

The park’s largest body of water is Yellowstone Lake, which, has a surface area of 132 square miles (342 square km) and lying at an elevation of 7,730 feet (2,356 meters).

5. Geysers in Yellowstone National Park 

Yellowstone National Park preserves more than 10,000 hydrothermal features — an extraordinary collection of hot springs, mud pots, fumaroles, travertine terraces and the most famous geysers.

Most of Yellowstone’s noted geysers and other thermal features are located in the western portion of the park, between Old Faithful and Mammoth Hot Springs.

Yellowstone’s climate is considerably variable because of park’s high average elevation, high latitude, and mountainous terrain.

Summer days are warm with daytime temperatures reaching about 80 °F (27 °C) and nighttime temperature in the 40 °F (about 10 °C).

Winters are cold and snowy, as temperatures stays between -20°F (about −4 °C) and often drop to 0 °F (−18 °C) or lower at night.

7. Variety Flora and Fauna in Yellowstone

Yellowstone park has 1,350 species of flowering plants, 300 different species of birds, 67 species of mammals, and many species of natural fish populations.

  • Some notable tree growths are lodgepole pines, whitebark pine, found at higher elevations and Douglas firs which dominate at lower elevations. 
  • Cottonwoods and willows grows along the streams with stands of aspens.
  • Bison (buffalo), the largest of the mammals is the most famous animal found in the park along with other animals like mule deer, black bears, foxes, coyotes, bears, bighorn sheep, pronghorns, mountain goats, and bobcats.
  • Songbirds and woodpeckers along with jays, chickadees, nuthatches, ravens, and waterfowl are some common birds found here.
  • Few reptile and amphibian species are found in Yellowstone, prairie rattlesnakes and boreal chorus frogs. 


8. Super Volcano in Yellowstone national park

Yellowstone is a supervolcano with one of the world’s largest active volcanoes lies beneath Yellowstone which can erupt of more than 240 cubic miles of magma and cover more than 5,790 square miles with ash.

9. Grand Canyon

Yellowstone has its own Grand Canyon created by erosion from the Yellowstone River.

The canyon is more than 1,000 feet deep, 1,500-4,000 feet wide and roughly 20 miles long, it also provides endless views. 

It is one of the most beautiful place to visit and take beautiful photographs.
